Airports

Three airports, zero guesswork

One commercial terminal and two private aviation facilities, each with its own meeting point. Choose your airport for the detail that applies to it.

Three arrival points, three different arrangements

Northeast Florida is served by one commercial airport and a set of general aviation facilities, and the ground arrangements differ enough that they are worth separating rather than lumping together as "airport service."

Jacksonville International is the commercial airport, roughly thirteen miles north of Downtown on I-95. It runs a single passenger terminal with two concourses, with baggage claim and ground transportation both on the lower level. It handles customs and is the practical port of entry for this region.

Signature Flight Support operates on the field at Jacksonville International as a fixed base operation for private and business aviation. It is a separate facility from the passenger terminal with its own access and its own meeting point, and a reservation there works from a tail number rather than a flight number.

Jacksonville Executive at Craig is a general aviation field roughly eight miles east of Downtown. For destinations at the Beaches, in Ponte Vedra, or at Mayo Clinic on San Pablo Road it is meaningfully closer than the international airport, but it has no customs facility, which rules it out for international arrivals.

The pages below cover each in detail. What follows here is the part that applies across all three, plus the honest comparison between them.

The rule that decides whether a JAX pickup works

This is the most consequential paragraph on the page, and it is the one most travellers do not know until it has gone wrong once.

Jacksonville International requires pre-arranged ground transportation operators to work the designated Ground Transportation Area on the lower level. Curbside pickup and the Hourly Garage are not available to pre-arranged vehicles. It is the airport's rule, not an operator's preference.

That is why a passenger who walks out to the arrivals curb expecting a car ends up on the phone with luggage in hand. Rideshare, taxis, and shared-ride products operate under their own arrangements in their own signed zones, rideshare uses a marked area on the arrival curb, so someone who has used an app here before arrives with the wrong mental model for a pre-arranged vehicle.

The practical version is short: collect your bags at baggage claim on the lower level, follow the ground transportation signage on that same level, and the vehicle is in the designated area. The walk is genuinely short because the terminal is small.

This rule also has diagnostic value when you are comparing operators. If a company quoting your transfer says the driver will pull up to the curb, they are describing something the airport does not permit for their category. Either they do not know the rule or they intend to improvise around it, and in both cases you are the person standing at a carousel.

Delays, waiting, and cancellations

Arrivals on commercial flights are timed against the flight that is actually operating rather than the schedule that existed when the reservation was made.

The value is not the technology, it is that a task disappears from your day. A flight forty minutes late moves the pickup by forty minutes with no action from you. A flight twenty minutes early moves it forward. A gate change is irrelevant because the meeting point is on the lower level rather than at a gate.

Waiting for a late arrival is part of the transfer, it has to be, or the tracking would be meaningless. What is not open-ended is the period after you have collected your bags, since a passenger who then spends an hour at a terminal restaurant is occupying a vehicle. The written quote states where that boundary sits rather than leaving it to a conversation afterwards.

A cancelled flight moves the reservation rather than forfeiting it, because a cancellation was not your decision. The formal cancellation terms are stated in the confirmation in hours rather than adjectives, which is worth reading once when it arrives.

Private arrivals work differently. There is no flight number to follow, so the reservation works from a tail number and an arrival window, and private schedules move more freely and later than airline schedules. Those pickups run best with a live coordination contact on both ends, the flight department or the assistant, and dispatch, rather than a passenger relaying times from a ramp.

Choosing between JAX and Craig

For anyone with a choice, which in practice means private aviation, the comparison comes down to three things.

Ground distance favours Craig for the eastern and southern half of this region. It sits about eight miles east of Downtown, so a run to the Beaches, to Ponte Vedra Beach and TPC Sawgrass, to Mayo Clinic on San Pablo Road, or to a Southside address is materially shorter than the equivalent from JAX, which is north of the city on the far side of the metropolitan area from all of those.

Customs favours JAX absolutely. Craig has no customs facility, so an international arrival cannot clear there. Any itinerary arriving from outside the United States has to clear at a facility that handles it, and in Northeast Florida that means Jacksonville International. This is the reason international patients travelling to Mayo Clinic route through JAX rather than the closer field.

Aircraft and handling requirements also push larger aircraft toward the international airport, which is a flight department decision rather than a ground transportation one but explains the traffic distribution.

For destinations on the north or west side of Jacksonville, JAX is as close or closer and the question does not really arise. Craig is an advantage for a specific half of this region rather than universally, and the honest answer depends entirely on where the trip is going.

Departures from around the region

A departure pickup is arithmetic, and because Jacksonville is the largest city in the contiguous United States by land area, the answer differs enormously by origin.

To Jacksonville International: Downtown is roughly thirteen miles and a short run north on I-95. San Marco and the Southside are further and cross the Downtown interchange. Jacksonville Beach comes inbound on J. Turner Butler Boulevard and then north. Ponte Vedra is thirty-plus miles. Amelia Island is about thirty-five via I-95 and SR-200. St. Augustine is roughly fifty-five.

The morning peak, roughly 7 to 9 a.m., converges on the Downtown interchange, and everything crossing the St. Johns funnels onto a handful of bridges, the Main Street, Acosta, Fuller Warren, Hart, Mathews, and Buckman. When one has an incident there is no parallel route, only the next bridge, at a cost measured in tens of minutes rather than a few.

A departure to a general aviation field is easier in one respect: there is no airline check-in queue and no boarding cutoff, so the security margin a commercial flight requires does not apply. It is harder in another, because the aircraft time is set by the flight department and frequently moves on the morning of the trip.

Very early departures are the strongest single case for pre-arranging in this whole category. A 5:40 a.m. flight means a pickup before 4 a.m. from the outer parts of this region, and app availability at that hour in Nocatee or on Amelia Island is not something to plan a flight around.

What airport transfers cost

Sedan $120 an hour, premium SUV $150, Mercedes S-Class $230, Mercedes Sprinter $240, with a three-hour minimum on every hourly reservation.

A one-way transfer receives an exact itinerary quote. Send the pickup and destination, date, time, passengers, bags, and any stops. Hourly hire is a separate reservation with a three-hour minimum; complete three-hour estimates are $360 sedan, $440 SUV, $690 S-Class, and $710 Sprinter.

Compare separate transfer quotes with one hourly reservation covering all driving, waiting, and stops. A six-hour sedan estimate is $710. The choice depends on the full schedule and written totals; transfers do not automatically carry hourly minimums.

Published hourly estimates include gratuity and applicable service and card charges. Confirm any airport access, FBO, parking, toll, or venue charges in the written quote, along with terms for extra waiting.

Groups are worth pricing differently. A dozen people arriving across a Friday afternoon booked as individual sedan transfers is twelve minimums; booked as Sprinter runs cycling the window it is two or three vehicles and a substantially lower total, with one contact holding the flight manifest rather than twelve people each managing a driver.

Luggage, and the honest alternatives

More airport transfers fail on vehicle sizing than on timing, and it is entirely preventable at the quote stage.

An executive sedan is about three passengers and about three bags, a planning figure that still needs confirmation. A premium SUV is a class to request for four or more with real luggage once the assigned vehicle is confirmed. A Mercedes Sprinter is the group class at about twelve passengers and about twelve bags; confirm assigned seats and storage rather than promising fourteen. Golf clubs are the local complication: a foursome with four travel bags and four club covers frequently exceeds a single SUV, so ask whether one SUV, two SUVs, or a Sprinter is the assigned configuration that fits rather than accepting "we have SUVs."

Cruise luggage is the heaviest per person in this market. Car seats need the child's age because the seat type depends on it. Folding wheelchairs, walkers, rollators, and portable oxygen concentrators may travel only if the assigned vehicle has the space; name the device and dimensions. A passenger who cannot transfer into a vehicle seat needs a wheelchair-accessible vehicle with a ramp or lift, which is specialist equipment rather than something a larger SUV substitutes for.

And the alternatives deserve naming honestly. Rideshare works its own signed zone at JAX and for a solo traveller with a carry-on at midday it is very likely the right choice. Shared-ride products price per passenger, which reads cheap for one and stops reading cheap for a family. Rental cars and self-parking make sense for a stay where you want a car all week.

Pre-arranged service earns its price under specific conditions: departures before 6 a.m., arrivals after 10 p.m., destinations where app supply is genuinely thin, four or more passengers, golf clubs, mobility equipment, groups, and any trip where being late has a consequence you cannot absorb.

Where transfers from these airports go

The destination changes the timing, the vehicle, and the price more than anything else about an airport booking, and this region spreads a long way.

The urban core, Downtown, San Marco, Riverside and Avondale, the Southside office corridor, is the shortest and steadiest work, mostly business travel in sedans. Mayo Clinic on San Pablo Road is about twenty miles from JAX and much closer to Craig, usually reached via I-95 south then east on JTB, with the I-295 East Beltway over the Dames Point Bridge as the alternative when the centre of the city is loaded.

The three Beaches towns, Jacksonville Beach, Neptune Beach, Atlantic Beach, come off J. Turner Butler Boulevard and carry real leisure luggage. Ponte Vedra Beach and TPC Sawgrass are the golf and resort volume and the most luggage-intensive destination in this market. Nocatee sits in St. Johns County and reaches the coast on the untolled Nocatee Parkway.

Amelia Island is roughly thirty-five miles north of JAX via Exit 373 and SR-200, across a single bridge with no bypass, which is why departure legs from the island carry more margin than the mileage suggests. St. Augustine is roughly fifty-five miles south to Exit 318. The Jaxport cruise terminal is northeast near Dames Point with a boarding window that does not move.

Beyond the region, transfers continue to Gainesville, Daytona Beach, Orlando and Orlando International, and Savannah. Those are quoted as whole itineraries rather than by the hour, with the quote stating whether the vehicle waits or returns empty.

Common questions

Where do pre-arranged cars pick up at JAX?

In the designated Ground Transportation Area on the lower level, next to baggage claim. The airport requires pre-arranged operators to use that area and does not permit pickup at the public curb or in the Hourly Garage. Rideshare and taxis work their own separate signed zones on the arrival curb.

Which airports do you serve?

Jacksonville International for commercial flights, Signature Flight Support on the field at JAX for private aviation, and Jacksonville Executive at Craig about eight miles east of Downtown for general aviation. Each has its own page with the meeting points and the detail that applies to it.

Does Craig Airport have customs?

No. An international arrival cannot clear at Craig, so an aircraft coming from outside the United States has to clear elsewhere. Jacksonville International handles customs and is the practical port of entry for this region, which is why international itineraries route through JAX rather than the closer field.

How much is an airport transfer?

A one-way transfer receives an exact itinerary quote. Send the pickup and destination, date, time, passengers, bags, and any stops. Hourly hire is a separate reservation with a three-hour minimum; complete three-hour estimates are $360 sedan, $440 SUV, $690 S-Class, and $710 Sprinter.

What if my flight is delayed?

Include the operating flight number on the quote request so pickup time can be set from the published schedule. If the flight moves, send the update. Private arrivals work from a tail number, an FBO name, and an arrival window instead.

Can you meet me inside with a name sign?

Ask on the quote request if you want an inside meeting with a name sign at JAX rather than walking to the Ground Transportation Area. Put it on the confirmation rather than arranging it on the day.

Which airport is closer to Ponte Vedra?

Craig, and by a substantial margin, it sits about eight miles east of Downtown while JAX is north of the city on the far side of the metropolitan area, thirty-plus miles from Ponte Vedra Beach. The same applies to the Beaches and Mayo Clinic. Craig cannot handle international arrivals, though.
